The grasslands (Bokuya) are used for sustainable conservation activities in Aso.
The ways in which the grasslands are utilized has changed over time and new initiatives have become a necessity.
In light of this, the relationship between and the role of Michi no Eki Aso has become increasingly significant.
Grasslands that have been preserved through human intervention can only continue to be maintained with ongoing human involvement. This human involvement can be described as a secondary form of nature that acts as protection through proper use.
The grass of the grasslands is grazed on by the cattle, which helps maintain the beautiful landscape. Humans consume these cattle in the form of the famous Akaushi beef, this ensures the number of grazing cattle remains sufficient.
Additionally, the grass from the grasslands is used as hay to feed cattle during the winter months. The manure produced from this hay consumption is used as a fertilizer, enabling the cultivation of crops in Aso, which are sold as Aso branded vegetables.
At Michi no Eki Aso, these vegetables are sold directly by the farmers and producers to the customers, ultimately contributing to the maintenance of the grasslands. Furthermore, guided tours are conducted by Bokuya guides to showcase the charm of grasslands that are not currently being used for grazing. A percentage of the tour fees are collected in the form of conservation funds, which are then used to support the maintenance and management of the grasslands.
Centered around Michi no Eki Aso, efforts are being made to create a sustainable cycle that connects livestock farmers, vegetable farmers, tourism operators, local residents, and visitors.
This initiative aims to preserve the grasslands while ensuring their proper and effective use.
In establishing this system, it becomes possible for the grasslands (Bokuya), an important regional resource of Aso, to be passed down to future generations.
We hope that visitors to Aso will fully enjoy the charm of the grasslands and become a part of the sustainable activities that connect this precious resource to the future.
