ASO SHARE BIKE FREE. This is the name of a new service available in Aso that started on August 21st and which is planned to last until November 24th.
These e-bikes are available to rent at Aso station, Aso volcano museum, the Daikanbou view point and at the Aso Onsen inn union in Uchinomaki area. Note that you don’t have to return the bike where you rent it but are free to return it in any of the 4 rental sites.
To be able to rent one these bikes you need to download the 「INTERSREET」app from google play or the Apple App Store. Then follow the registration process as instructed on the flyer above. Note again that any phone number is okay even if the app ask you for a Japanese number. A credit card number will also be asked but you won’t be charged for this service as it is completely free.
You can find pictures of the kind of bikes available on the following website http://kogidasu.jp/sharebike/bike/ (only in Japanese for now). I highly recommend, for example, to ride a bike from the volcano museum to Aso station. You will only go down and you’ll be able to enjoy some great views on the way. The same is true for going from the Daikanbou viewpoint to Uchinomaki or Aso station. It can also be a way to enjoy some less renowned tourist spots such as the Kokuzo Shrine in Teno or, one of my favorite, the ancient sankinkotai road in Matoishi.
The rent is limited at one day and you need to return the bike before 5pm. This service being available for free is really great in addition of being very convenient. I plan to try this service myself as soon as I can. Expect some pictures to come!
