Home Cooking – Rapeseed Flowers rice seasoned with various ingredients

Hello Readers of Michinoeki Aso, Yoshimi here greetings to all!

I shared about home cooking the other day on facebook and hoping everyone can try out various cooking and at the same time add some ideas to your list!

Have you seen such flowers as shown on below picture? It is known as rapeseed  flowers (菜の花ーなのはな)and is an edible plant. You get to see them in many areas during spring season here in Japan and there are quite a number of methods to consume it. However do take note that edibles one are those with the flowers not bloom yet such as those circled in red below. These rapeseed flowers can be found in some supermarket or should you have any friends with kitchen garden or plantation; you may wish to get some from them to try this recipe. By the way, sometimes it is also found in Michinoeki Aso!

Among many ways to consume; I tried out this easy and simple recipe and is also my first time trying it! ➢➢➢➢➢➢Excited to find out a new taste!

Rapeseed flower rice seasoned with various ingredients

Ingredients

Rice 2 cups

Fresh Ginger 40g

○ Soy sauce 1 tablespoon

○ Mirin 1 tablespoon

○ Salt 1/2 teaspoon of salt

○ Dashi 400ml (Japanese soup stock made from fish and kelp)

Rapeseed flowers about 120g

Salt 1 teaspoon

Steps:-

  1. Wash the rapeseed flowers and cut them into 2-3 inch each, separating the flowers and the stalk.
  2. Wash the rice and soak it with water, set it aside for 30 mins.
  3. Sliced the ginger and cut them into finely cut strips as shown on picture.
  4. In a pot or frying pan, place in some water and once boiled add in 1 teaspoon of salt next adding the stalk of rapeseed flowers, next the flowers and gently mix them and switch off the fire. (Take note not to overboil them, about 1-2 mins is good enough)
  5. Rinse it with chilled tap water and drain dry.
  6. In a rice cooker, place in rice which had been soaked for 30 mins.(remove water soaked earlier) and start adding ingredients mark  and finely cut strips ginger, mixing them well and turn on your rice cooker.
  7. Here, delicious seasoned rice is ready, lift up the cover and mix in the boiled rapeseed flowers and roughly mix them and it’s ready to be serve!

A lovely refreshing colour seasoned rice above looks so appetizing isn’t?

By the way, you can also add in some chicken, pork or bacon accordingly to your liking when cooking together with the rice.
