Crimson clover and Azaleas in Aso

Hello from Michi no Eki Aso!

Today I am going to talk about two kinds of flowers that you can see in Aso!

Firstly, a red flower called the “Crimson clover”.

We call them “Strawberry candle” in Japanese. Strawberry candles get their name because they look like a mix between a strawberry and a candle.

You can see them in Uchinomaki area (my hometown). I did not know that place before I worked here at Michi no Eki Aso ; )

This is a hidden place for even locals. You would be lucky to find that spot!

Some more information you will find at Michi no Eki Aso. Please come and say hello to us and have a chat!

The Strawberry candle’s viewing areas are available on the map here below.

I also would like to talk about Azaleas, as they grow up high in the Kyushu mountains.

We call them “Miyama-Kirishima”(ミヤマキリシマ)in Japanese.Miyama means “deep in the mountains. Kirishima is the name of Mount Kirishima.

Sensuikyo(仙酔峡) is one of the famous sites for seeing Miyama-Kirishima in Aso.

When I went there on 6 May, they were not in full bloom yet as shown in the pictures below.

This weekend should be perfect to go and see them ( They will be in full bloom! )

If you are interested in hiking, you can hike from Sensuikyo to Mount Takedake and over to Mount Nakadake.

※The level alert at the crater was raised to level 2. You will not be able to  see the crater right now.

You can enjoy seeing Miyama-Kirishima while hiking to mountains.

You can follow the direction to Sensuikyo below.

We welcome you to Aso. Please feel the  fresh air and enjoy our beautiful nature.
