Hello! This is Kana, I am a new staff at the help desk of Michi No Eki Aso.
I started working here from July 2nd, and this is my 4th day:)
I am originally from different area of Japan, now I’ve been in Aso for 8 years with my American husband and 3 children and 1 dog and 2 goats:)
We are all happy here, discovering something new everyday even after 8 years passed since we moved to Aso!
By the way, we are right in the middle of rainy season now☔
There was not much rain in June, but it has been raining everyday since July 1st, for a week… I miss a beautiful sunny day….
Well, but there is a couple things I am looking forward to in rainy season, so I would like to share these with you 🙂
Let’s focus on the flowers today🌺
It was dry in the end of June this year, but as soon as rain came down, all the plants came back into their life!
This is hydroasia, which is called “Ajisai” in Japanese.
Maybe it not so familiar for you, but Ajisai is one of the symbol of rainy season for us.
Which is very interesting, they change the color depending on pH of the dirt where they grow.
As I look around in Aso, I see blue one more often.
“Blue” means?? → Acidity!
Do you know why?
Because in Aso area (actually whole of Japan) ,the dirt is made from the volcanic ash so it becomes acidity more than likely. You can tell it by the color of Ajisai, it is interesting , isn’t it?
There is another blossom I like to see in rainy season.
We call it as “Nemunoki” ,“Nemu” means sleepy in Japanese.
They close their leaves at night, so it is called as “sleeping tree”:)
In general, their look is not anything special so that I don’t realize it is there.
But as soon as the rainy season come, I find how beautiful they are. Vivid pink flowers cover all over the tree, it is so pretty.
It was very windy this morning, I am sorry I couldn’t take a very good photo.
They grow so fast, I remember that this tree was a tiny baby 5 years ago!
If you would like to know more about “ Nemunoki”
