If you’re lucky enough to be in Japan right now, you’re in for a treat!
Cherry blossoms, or sakura, are in full bloom — and in Aso, they’re absolutely stunning this year. ✨
While the sakura season is short and sweet, it’s one of the most magical times to explore Japan. Away from the busy cities, Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture offers peaceful, off-the-beaten-path hanami (flower viewing) spots surrounded by beautiful mountains, local culture, and hidden shrines.
To help visitors enjoy this spring experience, Michi-no-Eki Aso (Roadside Station Aso) has created a cherry blossom map! Although it’s in Japanese, the photos and locations can still be helpful — check it out if you’re planning your trip.
Here are 5 must-see cherry blossom spots we explored today:
1. Koyasugawara Kannon – A Shrine of Blessings and Blossoms
Located in the Otohime area, this peaceful shrine is dedicated to blessings for children and families.
On the way there, stop by Bakery Works, a cozy local bakery with amazing bread and pastries!
The cherry blossoms are currently in full bloom and petals are just starting to drift gently through the air. Truly magical.
2. Hebiishi Shrine – Where Sacred White Snakes Meet Cherry Trees
This unique shrine is known for its white snake deities, considered symbols of good luck and fortune in Japanese culture.
There are two sacred white snakes hidden deep in the shrine grounds.
With 2025 being the Year of the Snake in the Japanese zodiac, it’s the perfect time for a spiritual visit + sakura viewing combo!
3. Matoishi Ochaya Site – Reflections of Nature and History
This spot near a shrine features a natural spring and a small river surrounded by lush greenery.
Here, mountain cherry trees bloom beside the flowing waters, creating a tranquil, picture-perfect scene.
Although the blossoms may have just passed their peak, the serenity and beauty of this spot are worth the visit.
4. Ubu Shrine – A Local Gathering for Sakura and Shibazakura
A community favorite, this shrine is where locals gather for their hanami celebrations.
You’ll find both cherry trees and shibazakura (moss phlox) blooming here. While the cherry blossoms are at their peak, the moss phlox is currently about halfway to full bloom.
It’s a great spot to enjoy both local culture and colorful spring flowers!
5. Myogyoji Temple – A Stunning Weeping Sakura in the Heart of Aso
Located in the center of Aso’s Uchinomaki hot spring area, this temple features a dramatic weeping cherry tree with branches that stretch far beyond the temple walls.
The area is full of charming cafes and restaurants, making it a perfect stop for hanami with local food and a peaceful stroll.
Bonus Tip:
Aso Shrine, one of the region’s most famous spiritual sites, is also a great spot for cherry blossoms.
At night, the trees are lit up beautifully, creating a magical evening experience.
