Hello from reception desk at Michi No Eki Aso.
I had experienced first time in my life last Sunday which is Noyaki…!!
Noyaki means burning grasses. This is Aso’s traditional technic maintained to prevent tree growth through mowing in the end of summer to autumun than burn-off dried grasses in early spring. This is good to fertilizer for new grasses and keep Aso’s particular ecosystem
The person set fire grasses is key for Noyaki. He/she might be read the wind. It’s could be danger.
He is Keikichi san the chief of Koga Bokuya (private grassland) area. He had studied agriculture in U.S.A. He’s wearing cowboy hat!
Shou is young grassland keeper 19 years old ( 13 FEB today is his birthday!). He has well-knowledge about Noyaki and provide us burn-off experience safety. He’s good speaker about Aso grassland culture. He loves cycling winding roads with Bianchi or Cannondale.
For safe burning, volunteer foundation “Greenstock” members supported Noyaki.
This is water stock backpack till 20L with water extinguisher.
This is traditional bamboo stick for put out the fire.
That was really exciting experience! I appreciate Keikichi san and Shou kun(#^^#) Arigatou!
Have a good day!
Thea
