Hello everyone, this is Ando!
Recently, I received exciting news that Koga Falls in Aso, Kumamoto had frozen over, so I couldn’t resist visiting this spectacular sight myself. If you’re traveling to Aso during winter, it’s a must-see destination!
On December 25th, just before noon, the lower part of the falls had thawed, allowing water to flow freely.
However, the ice formations at the top were still in full glory, creating a mesmerizing scene where water and ice coexisted in perfect harmony.
The surrounding rocks were also frozen, and the leaves shimmered with frost, sparkling like tiny diamonds.
About Koga Falls
Located just 15 minutes by car from Aso Station (Aso City), Koga Falls is nestled in the Sakanashi area. The land upstream of the waterfall is flat, meaning water doesn’t accumulate as much, but during the colder months, this leads to the formation of massive ice pillars that can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet) tall.
Why is this area so flat? It’s believed that a huge volcanic eruption about 270,000 years ago caused pyroclastic flows that filled in valleys and small mountains, resulting in the unique landscape we see today.
You can reach the falls in about 20 minutes by foot from the parking lot. The walk through the woods is serene and peaceful, offering a perfect escape into nature.
How to Get There
Koga Falls is easy to find with clear signposts along the way. While Google Maps can sometimes take you on a detour, simply follow Route 265 and turn at the road near Furusato Sosei NPO. You’ll see the signs guiding you to the parking area.
- Parking Fees:
- Regular car / Kei car: 300 yen
- Microbus: 500 yen
- Motorcycle: 100 yen
Once you park, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the falls. Don’t worry—there are signs to guide you along the way. The trail is surrounded by beautiful trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Keep in mind that some parts of the path are steep, so bringing a walking stick might be a good idea.
As you walk, you’ll cross a tunnel above the Houhi Line, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a passing train!
