We had the first snow of the season on Mt. Aso last week.
If you’re planning to visit Aso this winter by rental car, here’s some important information to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
Snow Conditions in Aso:
The elevation at the base of the caldera, where we are (about 500m), typically doesn’t see snow on the roads. However, areas like Kusasenri, Aso Nakadake Crater, and Daikanbo are located at higher elevations, so weather conditions can change rapidly.
These key locations can experience snow or icy conditions during the winter, so it’s important to stay updated on road conditions.
Snow Tires are a Must:
If you’re planning to drive around Aso, make sure to request snow tires for your rental car. This will help ensure better traction on icy or snowy roads.
Live Camera Feeds:
You can check the current weather and road conditions via live camera feeds at Aso Nakadake and Kusasenri / Daikanbo. This will help you plan your trip more safely.

Recommended Routes and Bus Service for Safety:
If you’re coming from Kumamoto city, the navigation system may suggest the shortest route to Aso Nakadake Crater or Kusasenri, but avoid it in snowy or icy conditions. We recommend taking Route 111 (also called the Panorama Line). This route is maintained better, since buses use this road to reach Kusasenri and the crater, it’s typically in better condition than other routes.
Last winter, we saw many accidents on alternate routes due to snow and ice. For safety, we recommend using the Panorama Line.
If road conditions are unsafe for you to drive, consider taking the bus from JR Aso Station.
