Step into an Anime World: Discover Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine

Discover a Magical Spot That Feels Like Stepping into an Anime World: Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, Aso

Are you ready to immerse yourself in a mystical, anime-like world? If you’re visiting Japan, I have the perfect spot for you in South Aso!

Introducing Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine (上色見熊野坐神社), a hidden gem that not only offers an incredible atmosphere but is also famous for being a filming location in anime and film adaptations. This sacred shrine appeared in Natsume’s Book of Friends movie and the live-action Rurouni Kenshin film, making it a must-visit spot for fans and those seeking a magical escape.

⇩Climb the stairs

The shrine’s approach, lined with 97 stone lanterns, feels like an entrance to another world. As sunlight filters through the moss-covered path, it creates a serene and otherworldly atmosphere. The beauty of the approach, with its towering trees and peaceful surroundings, is bound to take your breath away.

The History and Enchanting Beauty of Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine
This shrine dates back around 650 to 700 years and is surrounded by lush cedar forests. It is dedicated to the Kamishikimi deity, whose sacred tree is the “Nagi” tree. The leaves of this tree are said to connect people and bring good fortune, including blessings for “en-musubi” (good relationships) and “shoubai hanjo” (prosperity in business).

An Unforgettable Experience: Best Time to Visit
For an even more magical experience, I recommend visiting early in the morning when the place is quieter and the atmosphere feels extra mysterious. Imagine walking in a traditional yukata during the summer, surrounded by the natural beauty and ancient history of this incredible spot.

The Legend of Ugetoiwa: A Sacred Landmark
Behind the shrine, there is a path that leads to Ugetoiwa, a massive wind hole over 10 meters wide and long. According to legend, it was created when the demon Onihachi fled from Aso Daimeijin, breaking through the mountain to escape.

This sacred rock is believed to bring success in exams and help grant wishes.
Take a moment to pray here and gain strength, just like the legendary demon!
