When people think of Aso, they often imagine the crater and Kusasenri, but there are many other wonderful spots to explore! This time, we will introduce three spectacular spots that can only be seen in the winter season.
Since these spots are not easily accessible by public transportation, we recommend using a rental car or your own vehicle. There is a rental car shop just a 2-minute walk from Michi-no-Eki Aso, or you can rent a car at Aso Kumamoto Airport and drive to Aso. Driving through Aso offers breathtaking scenery and is a truly enjoyable experience!
① Sensuikyo Gorge
Sensuikyo Gorge is located at the foot of Mount Nakadake and Mount Takadake, at an altitude of approximately 900 meters. In spring, the area is famous for its stunning Miyama-Kirishima azaleas, but in winter, the river freezes, creating long icicles on the waterfalls. Usually, the river flows freely, making it impossible to walk across, but when it freezes, you can walk on the ice! (Be cautious, as thin ice may break.)
Important Tips for Visitors:
- The frozen waterfall begins to melt when temperatures rise, so be sure to check the weather forecast in advance.
- The ground can be slippery, so wear warm clothing and non-slip shoes.
- If driving, winter tires or snow chains may be required. Please check road conditions before visiting.
Access:
- About 16 minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Aso
② Koga Falls
Koga Falls is a stunning waterfall in Aso, especially famous in winter when it transforms into a magnificent frozen waterfall over 100 meters high. It is a hidden gem for those exploring Aso, offering a breathtaking natural spectacle.
The walk from the parking lot to the falls takes about 30 minutes. The path has some inclines, providing a light hiking experience. Along the way, you can enjoy the sounds of birds, and there is a viewpoint in the cedar forest where you can sometimes see a train passing by!
Important Tips for Visitors:
- Google Maps may direct you to the wrong route, so it is best to follow the local signboards.
- The route is designed as a one-way system from Route 265 to the parking lot and back, with clear signs guiding visitors.
- Some roads are narrow, so drive carefully.
Parking Fee:
- 300 yen per car (cash only, so bring small change)
Access:

③ Ogi Peak
Ogi Peak is a true hidden gem known only to locals! If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination, this is the perfect spot.
At an altitude of 843 meters, the observatory offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Aso’s Five Mountains to the west, the Kuju Mountain Range to the north, and Mount Sobo to the south. It is also a fantastic spot to watch the sunrise or sunset.
At the summit, you will find the Asahi Inari Shrine, which is connected by a path lined with multiple torii gates, creating a mystical atmosphere. Additionally, the area features a walking course, allowing you to enjoy a scenic stroll with breathtaking views.
Important Tips for Visitors:
- The roads are narrow, so park your car near the Nakae Kagura Hall and use the walking course to reach the summit.
